Correct Memory Guidebook is a critical documentation of present-day Chinese political narratives, using irony to reveal how state power shapes collective memory.
I visually explored memory dynamics amidst propaganda and censorship using ink experiments. This visual language becomes a pervasive presence throughout the book.
Propaganda's intrusion mirrors ink spreading, akin to a blossoming flower or viral transmission. Conversely, censorship smudges and hides genuine memories.
At the book's outset and conclusion, excerpts from "1984" are featured. The use of mirrored text symbolizes the resonance between the events portrayed in the fiction and the realities observed in China.
↓ Chapter 1 records frequently used words and trends in contemporary ideological propaganda.
↓ Chapter 2 highlights narrative differences between mainland and foreign media in reporting on the Hong Kong protest in 2019 and the Xinjiang concentration camp incident. Some pages use translucent laser paper to illustrate the embellishment and cover-up of different voices by official narratives and censorship.
↓ Chapter 3 documents speech censorship during the Shanghai lockdown and the White Paper Movement.
